Ho Fung-Lin PhD

Dr. Ho Fung-lin started her study in the Lingnan style of Chinese painting under the tutelage of Prof. Chao Shao-an (1905-1998) and maintained a close association until his passing. Dr. Ho regularly represented Prof. Chao at opening ceremonies of his exhibitions at art galleries and museums, with many of them overseas.

In the creation of her own paintings, Dr. Ho has adhered to Chao’s advocacy of the importance of aesthetics and a strong focus on perfecting the use of brushes, as she believes that the use of brush strokes is an unique element in Chinese paintings. Dr. Ho’s works demonstrate the influences of Prof. Chao as well as showing her own artistic style. Dr. Ho has travelled widely to observe landscapes and sceneries; to date she has published five volumes of her paintings.

Since 1985, Dr. Ho has participated in numerous solo and joint exhibitions, both in Hong Kong and overseas. Her paintings have been exhibited at the Nanjing Museum in China, the Ashmolean Museum at the University of Oxford and at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum; these institutions also hold collections of her art. She studied poetry with Mr. Poon Siu-poon in 1984. In 1995, she started her research in the history of Chinese arts under the supervision of Prof. Lim Shu-zhong (1926-2014) for which she has obtained a doctoral degree at the Nanjing University of the Arts in 1998. Dr. Ho has written a number of articles for various publications.

Artistic Journey

Background

Ho Fung-lin is a native of Shunde, Guangdong province. In 1979, Ho studied under Prof Chao Shao-an to learn different genres of Chinese painting. Started from 1983, she has held a number of exhibitions and represented Prof Chao to attend the opening ceremonies of overseas museums and art galleries at many occasions. In 1984, she studied poetry under Poon Siu-poon. In 1995 she studied art history under Prof Lin Shuzhong at the Nanjing University of the Arts, China, and was conferred the doctoral degree in 1998.
